Food intolerances are triggered by natural food chemicals and or/ additives which cause reactions by irritating nerve endings in different parts of the body. Symptoms vary from person to person. The most common symptoms are recurrent hives and swelling, stomach and bowel irritation, and headaches. Some people can feel vaguely unwell with flu-like aches and pains, or get unusually tired, run-down or moody.
Most people with food intolerance are sensitive to more than one substance. This can include natural food chemicals (eg., salicylates, amines, glutamate) as well as one or more of the common food additives.
Depending on your ‘threshold’ for reacting, large doses may upset you whereas smaller amounts may have no immediate effect.
The only reliable way of finding out which food chemicals may be contributing to your symptoms is to eliminate all possible trigger substances at the same time, wait for symptoms to subside, and then reintroduce them one-by-one according to a systematic challenge protocol.
HOW CAN INGRID HELP YOU?
Ingrid will review your diet and your symptoms to determine whether food intolerances are the cause. If so, Ingrid will guide you on following a low chemical diet (Royal Prince Hospital Elimination Diet) and then help you to identify food chemical sensitivities by introducing foods based on the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital food challenge protocol.
Once the food(s) causing your symptoms have been identified Ingrid will develop a nutritionally balanced eating plan to ensure that you are not missing out on any vital nutrients.
